John Leech MP Welcomes Carbon Saving at Manchester Airport
5.42.16pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 29th Mar 2007
John Leech, Liberal Democrat MP for Manchester Withington, has welcomed work done by Manchester Airport to reduce environmentally damaging carbon emissions.
John Leech MP met with Airport chiefs last year and suggested that they contact The Carbon Trust to seek advice on reducing carbon emissions at the airport.
The Carbon Trust is an independent company which supports private and public sector organisations to reduce their impact on the environment through the release of carbon emissions.
As a result Manchester Airport has agreed to match a £60,000 grant from the Carbon Trust which will fund a number of carbon reducing initiatives including replacing the boilers in Terminal 1 with more energy efficient ones. Manchester Airport will also work with the various companies who operate on site to encourage them to join the scheme too.
John Leech says:
"Climate Change is the biggest issue facing us today. Only through drastically reducing the amount of carbon emissions being produced can the process of climate change be slowed.
"I am delighted that Manchester Airport has taken the step of contacting the Carbon Trust to take steps to reduce the damage done to the environment through carbon emissions.
"I would encourage any organisation or company to contact the Carbon Trust to help reduce their carbon emissions - and help save money through lower fuel bills at the same time.
"I have also contacted local schools with details of the Carbon Trust and I am delighted that some are going to get involved."
