Remploy provides work and skills for thousands of disabled people, many of whom are then able to go on to work in mainstream employment. However, the company insists that it has to cut costs by laying-off staff.
"It's important to ensure that disabled people are able to find jobs in the mainstream jobs market," said John Leech MP, speaking after the event. "However, many disabled people need to be helped to develop the skills and confidence to do this."
"The reality for many people with disabilities is that they often end up in low-skilled jobs in the open employment market," he continued. "These factories give people the opportunity to build up the essential skills that employers require."
