In light of massive data loss, John Leech MP slams Labour on ID card scheme

In a shocking admission, the Labour Government has admitted losing two discs containing the personal details of 25 million people. The misplaced records include names, addresses and dates of birth, as well as more sensitive data like National Insurance numbers and bank details. The loss is of particular concern to the British public because the information is of the sort often used for malicious and fraudulent purposes when obtained by criminals.
Liberal Democrat MP for South Manchester, John Leech, argues that this massive data loss justifies his anti-ID card position. The risks posed by compulsorily centralizing the personal ID information, he said, are clearly demonstrated by Labour's failure to adequately secure the personal details of 25 million individuals.
John Leech MP made the following comment:
"In the age of rampant privacy invasion and ID fraud, I am personally appalled by this revelation. This loss of sensitive information puts Labour's incompetence into clear and vivid focus, and I share the anxiety felt by families in the Manchester area and across England. Government plans to axe jobs at HMRC were always a recipe for disaster and it was only a matter of time before problems occurred. This disaster has proved that the Government can't be trusted with people's personal data, and
confirms why their plans for ID cards must be scrapped."
