Leech Takes Fallowfield Debacle to the Top2.40.41pm GMT Mon 22nd Dec 2008 John Leech MP is to meet regional bosses from Royal Mail to try and end the problems at Fallowfield's mail delivery office. Staffing shortages, reduced opening hours and piles of undelivered post mean that people can be queuing for an hour to pick up mail which could not be delivered. Back in January, Mr Leech, Lib Dem MP for Withington, led calls in Parliament that slammed postal service cuts in the area - and he is continuing his campaign to ensure that mail gets collected in good time during the festive season and beyond. Mr Leech said: "I am determined to make sure that the ludicrous situation of people queuing in the street to pick up their undelivered mail comes to an end." "The people of South Manchester have endured so many cutbacks in postal services that it is about time they got some good news. I will work hard to make sure they get it. I want reasonable opening hours, an end to confusing leaflets and posters and a fair deal for local jobs and local residents." <ENDS> Notes for editors: 1) Details of John Leech's EDM on the postal cuts in South Manchester can be found at: http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=34940&SESSION=891 2) On the 21st July 2008, John Leech delivered a petition signed by 2,500 residents of south Manchester to parliament, calling on the government to prevent the closure of post offices in Ladybarn and East Didsbury. 3) John Leech will be meeting with Royal Mail's Area General Manager for Greater Manchester and their Head of External Relations - North to discuss the matter.
