Lib Dem MP John Leech has welcomed the government's dramatic U-turn to allow full settlement rights to all Gurkha veterans who have served in the British Army for at least 4 years.

The announcement, made today by the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, represents the success of a long campaign by the Liberal Democrats and pressure groups, spearheaded by actress Joanna Lumley.

John Leech said:

'This is a triumph for decency and common sense and I am delighted by the decision. I would like to congratulate everyone who has been involved with the campaign. Last week I met with a group of Gurkhas from my constituency, including a British Army veteran, who I know will welcome this government U-turn as much as I do.

'I am proud to say that it was a Liberal Democrat motion which first led to the historic government defeat on this issue in the Commons last month. As a party, we've campaigned hard for the Gurkhas' settlement rights for many years and I just hope that the Home Secretary is now true to her word and processes the applications as quickly as possible.'

Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, added:

"This is a great victory for the Gurkhas and for everyone who has campaigned on their behalf."

"Gordon Brown has finally woken up to the principle that people across Britain understand instinctively: if someone is prepared to die for this country, they must be allowed to live in it."
